Language-Enhanced, User-Adaptive, Interactive eLearning for Mathematics

Highlights

LeActiveMath provides advanced technology, ideas and approaches. All topics addressed are cutting edge themes in the respective research communities and for the development of technology-enhanced learning.

For instance, supporting the learner most adequately while studying mathematics implies great challenges for the ability of the system to model the learner, maintain a coherent dialogue with the learner, and provide useful suggestions.

Learner modelling has to solve questions such as

  • how to determine the values of variables associated with learning relating to factors such as motivation, affect and metacognition
  • how to model competency levels as used in the PISA studies
  • what beliefs held about the learner will benefit the learner most if  they are shown to him/her.

The personalization relies on new solutions for

  • adaptation to modern competency-levels as used in the PISA studies
  • adaption to the learner's profile, goals and context
  • formalization of pedagogical knowledge
  • diagnosis of learner's interactions
  • generation of useful feedback.

Enhancing the system with natural language dialogues presents all the difficulties of natural language understanding and generation. More problems are added by a mixture of text and mathematical expressions. Tutorial strategies have to be discovered empirically and geared towards pedagogical goals.

The reuse of learning content and of components requires

  • rich semantic XML knowledge representation
  • realization of a service-approach for tools, components, and
    databases.

Technological highlights include:

  • open web-architecture and web-services
  • reusable components
  • multi-lingual system
  • sophisticated personalization
  • quality web-presentation including mathematical formulae
  • player for several types of interactive (multi-step) exercises
  • computer algebra system and other services used to generate feedback in interactive exercises
  • interactive tools: lexicon, private and public notes, adaptive assessment tool, interactive concept map tool
  • open learner model for visualizing the learners abilities
  • searchable web-based repository of interactive exercises.

Pedagogical highlights include:

  • moderate constructivist course
  • problem-based learning support
  • to model pedagogical knowledge
  • to model competency-level pedagogy.
